A large group of caterpillars of the willow ermine moth is frantically doing two things: (1) wrapping the willow and its surroundings with webs to protect itself from predators and (2) eating all the edible leaves. If there are too many caterpillars for the host tree, the caterpillars also often pack vegetation or other elements in the immediate vicinity with their webs. During this photo session, I had to continuously carefully remove caterpillars from my photo bag, my lens and camera, my shoes and trousers and from my hair, they were literally everywhere! more
