Now retired, I have more time to enjoy being out with my camera looking for scenes and subjects that pique my interest, especially coastal, woodland and close-ups. Although I still have several rolls of 35mm and MF film in my freezer, I shoot almost exclusively digital now
A snowfall had simplified an otherwise messy grassy bank and these skeletons of weeds took on a wonderful graphic appearance, isolated against an almost white background. As I was out of the office on a lunchtime walk, I had very little time to find good plants with attractive shapes. Looking for some balance in the frame and pleasing lines, I also tried different apertures to limit the depth of field. Some pictures work well with the very limited natural colour, others benefitted from conversion into pure b&w. In all these cameos I was struck by the simple elegance and beauty despite the decay caused by winter. I find experimenting with a small digicam (in this case a not-so-small Lumix G5!) very enjoyable alongside more “serious” photography and it helps me to be more receptive to what I stumble on.
