I remember the first time that I got up early with a camera to photograph the sun rise over Ullswater. It was the 23rd of February 2010 and I’d bought my first SLR camera, a Pentax K-X, about three weeks before. Up until this point I was firmly a happy snapping hillwalker who had treated himself to an upgrade from his old Canon compact. I went to Aira Point and shot back into the rising sun. The colour was magnificent. A wonderful range of reds, oranges and yellows spreading over the top of Hallin Fell with all the colours being reflected beautifully in the still waters of the lake.
Little did I know that on the other side of the bay from me was a gent by the name of Brian Kerr who was taking photographs in the opposite direction, looking down towards the magnificence of St Sundays Crag rising up above Glenridding. I’d joined Flickr the month before purely as a way of hosting images on various forums I was a member of. I didn’t really think that much about the sharing aspect at that stage. However, I realised I could search for other images that had been tagged. I did this and found this wonderfully moody image that Brian had taken the same time as mine. The gun metal bluey greys were at odds with my rose tinted versions and the atmosphere just drew me right in.
