Misty morning in Bolehill Quarry

Whilst on holiday in Derbyshire Joe had managed to tempt Dav out of bed early one morning at the beginning of Autumn on the promise of mist in Bolehill Quarry. The mist duly arrived and after Dav had playfully chastised Joe for getting to the rendezvous early to take a sneaky vista they headed of into the Quarry chasing the mist.  For Joe this was relatively new territory, for Dav you might say this was his home patch. Why more

Deadvlei

Under cover of darkness we left the tarmac of the road and embarked on a ten kilometre stretch of sand in the direction of Sossusvlei. My wife was slightly anxious. I’d never driven a 4x4 off road before, let alone in deep sand, in a Namibian desert, at night, and she knows full well how driven I am in getting pictures and that I'll generally do whatever it takes more

Adventures of a Landscape Photographer – Part 2

As you will know from Part 1 in the last but one issue, I spent over a week on Skye and Harris in the Outer Hebrides building up some stock landscape images in May of this year. Having travelled from Skye to Harris, I was enjoying the wonderful beaches with mountain backdrops around Seilebost and the Luskentyre Bay area. During my time on Harris, I experienced all four seasons, often within a very short period of time, including more

Adventures of a Landscape Photographer – Part 1

The alarm goes off at 4.40am. Outside my tent it’s minus 3 degrees with a cold northerly wind that’s been trying to blow the tent off the mountain throughout the night and even the dog is cold! It's just started to hail again and as the first signs of daylight are beginning to show in the sky, it's clear that this isn't going to be a classic sunrise! Believe it or not, this is Scotland in May and not more

Brittany

The endless variety of wonderfully sculpted shapes was simply overwhelming and I was constantly torn between taking shots to show the folks back home, and taking a more measured approach with an artistic intent. more

A Trip Report – Three Weeks Part 2

Last issue I talked about the first half of my epic photography 'vacation' where I finished a commission for the National Parks authority and a week giving a large format workshop. As soon as I got back it was off to Glencoe in the camper van with my ever loving (and occasionally despairing) wife. Now having visited Glencoe a few times and having done the ‘icons’ in the past, I was interested in looking for some different locations and/or different more

Sutton Bank & Lake District

Like many photographers, my family holidays and my photography trips blend into one, limited only by the patience and tolerance of my wife. more

A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Glacier…

One of my ‘best’ pictures was ‘taken’ at the face of Franz Josef Glacier on New Zealand’s South Island. The sheer scale of that monumental wall of ice. more

Loitering in the Countryside at Night

It was only a matter of time before I ended up loitering in the countryside at night. This series is my attempt at challenging my own relationship with and understanding of the landscape around me. When I was contemplating my next project, night time seemed an obvious choice for a few reasons. It would be technically and physically difficult and would certainly initially be fairly unpredictable in terms of what I would achieve photographically. Starting with no plan was as more

Great Wilderness Trek

During the making of Scotland's Mountains, Joe never had the chance to take a long hike with a few friends - he recently had the opportunity to get back up to Scotland with a bit more time and those same friends. I chatted with Joe about the experience and also how he coped with camera equipment (he only took small sensor cameras - three of them however, talk about belt and braces!). Ardnamurchan in the Rain

Only three and a half days of photography but a wonderful experience. The biggest learning from this trip for both of us was how the rain enhances colours and even at this time of year when things can get particularly dull, there is still wonderful colour to be had if you can brave the rain. more

A Skye Log

It’s an obsession, I admit it, even the giants of Torridon and the beautiful mountains of the far North West can’t drag me away from the Isle of Skye. more
