This last week I’ve been out testing two mirrorless medium format cameras and few people have commented on how lucky I am to have over £20k of cameras to play with. In reality, there isn’t a huge amount of enjoyment to be had, in fact, it’s a bit of a pain. There are only a few ways you can test cameras - you can compare how they handle, how they perform or how they look. How they look is fairly obvious. How they perform, beyond scientific analysis, is fairly subjective and finally, how they handle. Well, I’m still only just getting used to my Sony A7Rii that I’ve had for over a year and barely use 60% of the functionality - how I’m supposed to comment on a camera that I’ve only got in my hands for a couple of days is beyond me. As a reviewer, I can either make most of it up, write a ‘meta’ review of reviews or be honest and give very perfunctory view of first impressions, which is probably what I end up doing. There is another choice though - I could just give them both 95% (seems to work elsewhere). Keep an eye out for my un-review in the next issue!
