One of my great pleasures is looking to other media to inspire my photography, and a perfect example of this recently is the mini-series “Shogun”, which has to have, in my opinion, the most beautiful cinematography I’ve seen for quite some time. The vision of a historic Japan has so many opportunities for beauty, but the natural landscapes chosen for location filming were magical as well. What stood out is the use of what look to be tessar design lenses but, in actual fact, are very cleverly designed spherical lenses made by Hawk that include elements which give an anamorphic look without the disadvantages of the 2x horizontal stretch.
What this means is that you get a stunning old-school bokeh with a very small depth of field and close focus. Here’s a YouTube video showing some of the best examples.
The use of large apertures and panoramic pictures is something we don’t see in landscape photography very much and it’s a shame as it can be quite beautiful and evocative. I’d love to know some examples of films that have inspired your creative vision.
