Under the Bridge

Landscape has often been the generic photography term for shots of fields, trees, hills and landmarks and my first few years of serious landscape photography was concerned with finding the most spectacular scenery and applying general rules of composition to the scene. More recently I have discovered that the very things that I had previously been trying to avoid were important in their own right and if treated with care could be just as valid as any ‘Pen-y-ghent sunset’. I have been looking for a way of capturing the more mundane aspects of our environment and looking at the interaction of natural and unnatural and the way that black and white film can strip down the scene to just light and shade. In the ‘Under the Bridge’ selection I have played with composition, material and reflected light to create a set of shots that would stand out as unique in my collection and would perhaps suggest that there is a mid-ground to be found between traditional landscape and ‘urbex’.
